What can I say here about Jamaican music that hasn't already been said elsewhere?
Well, several things actually.
1.In France lots of people equate Jamaican music with Bob Marley. While agreeing that he's the undisputed king who put the music on the map, there has been lot of developments in the landscape since then; To pay repects to the late king there is nothing better than sitting in a hammock on a beach in Negril listening to Bob stirring it up, and there are still enough wanabees to tell you that he's still the one to beat
2. dancehall music is what gets people all riled up at the moment and the principal international representatives are Beenie man, Buju Banton, Bounty Killa, Shaggy and Sean-Paul. Dancehall got it's name from the open air sessions of the same name where it was born as a musical form. The beat is uptempo, the lyrics are inspired from street life and every rhythm came with its very own dance moves; we love it man!
3. We can't however omit to mention mento and ska the parents and grandparents of today's Jamaican music
4. Finally, lots of Jamaicans would kiss me, if they could, for mentioning this, (well, in fact, for other reasons, but that belongs on the adult pages!)Jamaican jazz and gospel music are highly developed art forms with recordings and performances to match the best anywhere. Then there's our carnival, still can't beat Brazil's but it's right up there with sex on the beach. (The drink of course, not the act, though..., if that's too strong for you try a red stripe beer.)
By the way, do you know what sketels and mantels are...humm...thought so
